Looking down Val de Moiry from Glacier du Mont Mine
This section contains a trip report and route description of a summer holiday taken with Jagged Globe during Summer 2007. A group of 6 of together with a guide completed the Mountaineers Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt. The Haute Route is approximately 8 days of mountaineering. Some of these days are fairly short like the first day to the Albert Premier Hut, whilst others such as the Bertol Hut to the Schonbiel are much longer. The total length of the route is approximately 71 km with 5500m of height gain.
I have decided not to supply sketch maps in this section of the site. However if you are planning on attempting the route the appropriate maps are the Carte Nationale de la Suisse 1:50,000 number 282 Martigny and 283 Arolla. For the Schonbielhutte to Zermatt and the Breithorn, Landeskarte Der Schweiz number 5006 provides good coverage. The book "The Haute Route Chamonix - Zermatt. A guide for skiers and mountain walkers" appears to be the only book that covers the route, but also seems to be aimed predominantly at skiers rather than mountaineers.
Our team consisted of John Falkiner (Guide), Duncan Parry, Helen Brannan, Ian Henderson, Francoise Henderson, Andy McQue and myself. We met up in Chamonix at the Hotel Vert on Saturday night for a BBQ and a couple of pints as well as an introduction from Moira who was co-ordinating activities in Chamonix. The next morning we met our guide John and went through our kit, throwing out all of those unnecessary items we had brought such as towels! We set off in the early afternoon, being given a lift to Le Tour by Moira.
Below are details of each day we spent in the mountains. There is a link to additional photos at the end of each day, and the complete album can be seen here. Within the album the owners of the photos are credited.
On to Day 1
