A walk taking you up to Aber Falls, and then to the top of the falls,
before going over the summits of Llwytmor and Foel Fras to Drum. Has good
views over to the Menai Straits. The route should not pose too many problems
in poor visibility, however if there has been a lot of rain or there is ice on
the ground then care must be taken when walking up the side of the falls.
Begin from the Aber Falls car park (GR 662720) and follow the signs to Aber
Falls. When you reach the falls (after approximately 30 minutes) take the path
to the left heading up a scree slope. Upon reaching the edge of the forest
turn right on a gently ascending path which will take you to the top of the
falls. There are a couple of places where care will be needed, since water can
flow across the path making some of the rocks slippery.
From the top of the falls follow the Afon Goch for approximately 1 km. From
here the summit of Llwytmor Bach is to the NE. Walk over rocky ground followed
by some more boggy ground to reach this summit, from where you will get good
views to Llandudno. Head in a SE direction over more boggy ground to the
summit of Llwytmor. If there is a need then there is an alternative route from
Llwytmor Bach. This is a steep descent to the NNW bringing you to the Afon
Anafon. This is a steep slope and care will need to be taken. I have only used
this once in extremely strong wind when it was unsafe to continue.
From Llwytmor make your way to the trig point on the summit of Foel Fras.
In poor visibility the wall running along to the summit can be used if you aim
slightly to the left of the summit. From the summit follow the wall, and then
the wire fence to the NE around to the rolling summit of Drum.
From Drum head off to the East down a steep grassy slope to reach Llyn
Anafon. From here there is a good track which will take you to the minor road
which you parked on. Alternatively if you do not want to go down to the Llyn
you can take the longer route by following the clear path off to the
North.
