This is a good walk for a half day, in fact the last time did it was before
traveling home. It takes you up a but of a scramble over some rocky ground,
before a descent down grassy slopes which can be (and invariably are) boggy.
It provides superb views across to the Snowdon
Horseshoe, and is a walk which I think is best enjoyed in good weather
when the views will be fully appreciated.
We begin just past Capel Curig (when driving from Ogwen). There is a small
amount of parking just past the minor road at GR 734573. Begin walking along
this road, and very soon take the turning off to the right which will go up
quite steeply and past a farm house. The route is simple enough in that you
just keep to this path. You will pass a fairly large lake, and will then reach
a smaller lake in a quarry. Continue the same way until you reach the larger
lake of Llyn y Foel.
From here the West ridge of Carnedd Moel Siabod can be seen. This is a bit
of a scramble, but you should be able to pick a route up to the summit. From
here stop to admire the views both across to the Snowdon Horseshoe in the
West, and the Glyderau to the North-West.
The descent is an easier choice of route. Head off to the North-East,
picking your way across the rocky ground, and keeping the cliffs to your
right. Take time to look down to the Mymbyr lakes to your left as you walk.
After just over 1km the route bends to the right a little more, and you follow
the ridge down a wet grassy slope to the road which you were following on the
way up. Simply follow this back to the start.
